Dr. Stephen T. Bartlett is the former Executive Vice President, Chief Medical Officer and Surgeon-in-Chief of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). In addition, from 1991-2017, he served in various key leadership roles at the School of Medicine of the University of Maryland, including as Chairman of the Department of Surgery and as the Peter J. Angelos Distinguished Professor of Surgery. He is an internationally renowned vascular and transplant surgeon who has enjoyed a truly remarkable career, spanning more than 3 decades.
Dr. Bartlett received his Bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and attended medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He then obtained his post-graduate training in General Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and undertook his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Northwestern University.
Board-certified in both General and Vascular Surgery, Dr. Bartlett commenced his professional career at the University of California, Davis in 1986. In 1990, he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. In 1991, Dr. Bartlett was recruited from California to Maryland to become Chief of the Division of Transplantation at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1991. He was named a full Professor of both Surgery and Medicine in 1996, positions he held until 2018.
Throughout his career, Dr. Bartlett has been actively engaged in sentinel research in the fields of transplantation and vascular disease, as well as actively teaching medical students and mentoring fellows and junior faculty. In addition, he has maintained a busy clinical practice involving both operative surgery and office-based patient care.
Dr. Bartlett is the author of over 230 scientific publications and is the former president of the International Pancreas and Islet Cell Transplant Association (IPITA), a section of the Transplantation Society. An accomplished and respected speaker, he has given hundreds of lectures and presentations, both within the United States and worldwide, on vascular and transplant-related topics. Furthermore, Dr. Bartlett has a particular passion for new techniques for vascular access in dialysis patients and for limb salvage procedures for severe peripheral vascular disease. Even as his career became more involved in transplantation he continued to provide vascular surgery care for pre- and post-transplant patients.
A highly accomplished and respected surgeon, researcher and healthcare executive, Dr. Bartlett has been recognized with many honors and awards, including twice by the University of Maryland Board of Regents with its coveted Faculty Award, in 2009 for Public Service and in 2014 for Research. Most recently, the Maryland State Senate and House of Delegates recognized him in 2018 for his innumerable contributions to the well-being of the citizens of Maryland with an Honorary Special Proclamation.
As a dynamic and visionary physician executive at the UMMS and a senior faculty leader at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Bartlett played a pivotal role in the expansion of world-class specialty surgical services throughout the state of Maryland, enhancing the quality of medical care at the UMMS hospitals, as well as in the development of the new Prince George’s Regional Medical Center.
